Free Pattern: Plain Striped Scarf

This is an excellent scarf for beginners, and provides easy knitting for more advanced knitters that need a break between complex projects. The 100 percent alpaca yarn is soft and luxurious. The scarf is lightweight; because alpaca is warmer than wool (and hypoallergenic, since it does not contain lanolin) you receive maximum warmth with minimum bulk. This narrow-ish scarf is long enough to be worn wrapped twice around the neck.

4.5 inches wide by 76 inches long.
Measurement was taken before blocking.

Blue Sky Alpacas Sport Weight [100% alpaca; 110 yds (101m) /50g]; 2 hanks MC (Natural Dk Gray), 1 hank CC (Red)
US #8/5.0 mm needles
Tapestry needle

4.5 sts per inch.
Gauge is not crucial for this pattern.

Any yarn will work with this pattern! Substitute worsted weight yarn and US 10 needles or bulky weight yarn and US 13 needles for a bigger scarf.

CO 20 sts in MC.

Work 14 ridges (28 rows) in garter stitch. Break yarn.

Attach CC and work 7 ridges (14 rows) in garter stitch. Break yarn.

Continue stripes in this manner until you have 14 stripes in MC and 13 stripes in CC.

Weave in ends. Add fringe if desired.
